Pandemic ignited my creativity to fuel the wings of poetry

I have been into poetry before the pandemic too. But lockdown gave me the wings of words and you will find me flying here.

Given the worsening of situation due to coronavirus pandemic, we have been instructed to leave the university campus as soon as possible, preferably 72 hours. I was then in IIT Bombay campus, involved in my research work.

Without any haste with necessary permissions, I booked the next day flight and got back to my home on 17th March, 2020. By that time, I had the least idea that I would be home today writing this article on 12 July, 2020.

So what I want to tell here is about this 'stay at home' period and how it enhanced my grill in poetry. With pandemic came solitude. Staying home for so long, nearly after 7 years allowed for a distinct breathing space that I craved for so long.

Talking about poetry doesn't make me an expert of any specific kind as when I am impacted by something, I write. Sometimes I miss writing about that too. Wings of desire also fly in the aimless sky. So, it's a conditional affair under an emotional haze.

The first one that I wrote was 'Mirror of Time'. It was impacted by two factors as mentioned below:

  • Andrei Tarkovsky - one of the most impactful filmmakers that I admire. Notably 'The Sacrifice', 'Nostalgia' and 'Stalker' are the ones that I have watched by now. To write about them here would be an understatement, as I am planning to write a separate article for the same.

  • Bloom by The Paper Kites - I took inspiration from the lyrics of this song and extended the poetic expression in line.

Here is the poem :

When the evening brings the sun down,

And the day is almost gone

Whole world would be sleeping,

Let your world be my moon

This is not the first nor would it be last,

Time has seen this before

Learning to cross the river,

Along the coast with a portrait

With the fields painted gold,

I'll carry blues and we hold

Are we in it together,

Or the path is painted red

Let me follow my muse,

I will see a mirror in you.

Following this as a start I posted poems everyday for the 21 days lockdown. Putting all of them here would be too much. Maybe out of interest if someone wants to read them, please mention it in the comments, I'll provide a link to all of them.

So to conclude, I must say it is one of the aspects of multiple reflections that I witnessed all along. For this pandemic brought creativity to many, I found solace.

The most happy person became my mother, who everyday I can see rejoicing my stay at home. Family bonds became strong.

Today I am more grateful than before. To find some time to write, is a privilege in itself. And here I am, gliding through the wings of desire.

I am an Engineer-Planner, currently pursuing PhD from IIT Bombay. Most of the time, I write for research and in my free time, there is an expression of poetry and storytelling.
